Ghanaians urged to own the electoral process to preserve peace
Sep 17, 2012
Accra, Sept 14, GNA – To keep a firm grip on Ghana’s peace, citizens have been urged to own the electoral process by respecting their civic duties and constitutional rights.
Mr Jarreth Merz, Director and Producer of the film “An African Election” gave the advice in an interview with the Ghana News Agency at the end of a press conference held in Accra on Friday.
“An African Election” is a political documentary that depicts the political electioneering processes in Africa, including Ghana.
Mr Merz cautioned the public to be vigilant and to be properly informed, adding that rumours fuelled by ignorance were a bane to electoral peace.
He condemned rumours, adding that in the 2008, false stories peddled by some individuals that some ballot boxes in polling stations had been taken away created unnecessary tension in the country.
Mr Merz added “the rumours were not true, we were right there and no ballot boxes had been taken away.”
He called on Ghanaians to treasure the country’s peace and stressed that it should not be taken for granted.
Mr Mertz said the film would be shown countrywide in a project dubbed: “African Safari”.
He added that the film had been translated into five Ghanaian languages namely Twi, Ewe, Ga, Hausa and Dagbani.
The project is in collaboration with the Electoral Commission of Ghana, National Commission for Civic Education, civil society groups, the European Union in Ghana and the Institute of Economic Affairs.
It is sponsored by Fidelity Bank, Svani Limited and 18 artistes.
